A strange question to ask...

I came across this article the other day. The headline says: Few in Hong Kong support Taiwan's independence. The article indicates a high percentages of Hong Kong people disagree with Taiwan's attempt of independence. I found it hilariously ridiculous but somehow it reflects the mixed feeling of Chinese toward Taiwan.

Hong Kong, as a lost-n-found territory of China, was and still is a model for the one China, two system concept. It is depicted and presented as the blueprint for the possible promising future under the Chinese star flag. Hong Kong and Taiwan have long been closely-monitoring and competing with each other in both economics and political wise.

But why it sounds so wrong when this so-called GLOBAL MONITOR, Angusreid, post an article of the polls of Hong Kong people's opinion toward the future of Taiwan?

First, it is a far cry to ask Hong Kong peoples' opinion about the future of Taiwan. Historically, Taiwan has retrieved from the Japanese colonization for more than 50 years. Plus the prior 50 years under colonization, Taiwan and China are politically separated for more than 100 years.

Taiwan is not another state like the British colonized Hong Kong before 1997, bears an EXPIRING DATE in its future.

Do the Hong Kong people enjoy the life back to the mother country? Maybe we should check out the figures of immigration before and after 1997 and the frequency of large-scale protest for democracy.

Do the polls stands for anything?

Yes, it is either Hong Kong people jealous of the freedom in Taiwan, or the news article is a make-up farce, which doesn't seem rare in the international news coverage.

How do Taiwanese see Hong Kong?

We pray for them.
